On Wednesday, January 15th, all of Bryant School participated in our Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly honoring his work and service. The assembly was full of poems, songs, and love! It was a truly beautiful event, and all of the students did their very best. I am so proud of each of them! Here are the recordings of the songs we sang, in case you missed it. Just click the links below to take you to that grade's song. A special thank you to all of the students and teachers who participated!
Hello, Bryant & Pattengill family and friends! I am so pleased to inform you that we have very exciting new elements in the Bryant music room: A circular music note carpet, and six brand new puppets! Our carpet is 13'2", which is the perfect size for our classes here at Bryant! Each of our students fit perfectly in the individual squares, and we have made connections to the written music notation that is pictured on the carpet. Additionally, the Burns Park Players granted the music room six brand new puppets! We have Ernie the Dog, Norman the Dog, Grizzly Bear, Donkey, Joe Do, and Tabby the Cat. I have attached some pictures below! I am feeling so thankful and excited to be a part of the Bryant & Pattengill community. I hope you and your family have a wonderfully restful winter break, and I will see you all in two weeks! Dear Bryant/Pattengill Family and Friends,
I cannot believe we just wrapped up our thirteenth week of school! We have a Thanksgiving break this week, so we have been singing lots of songs about turkeys and thankfulness. Because of this, I have been reflecting on what I feel thankful for! I want to express my sincere gratitude for being a part of the Bryant/Pattengill community. I have felt welcomed and comfortable in both schools since my first day! Each and every day I am reminded how fortunate I am to work at a place where students are celebrated and valued for their diversity, encouraged to be kind to one another, and work hard to be the best they can be. I cherish each day with your students. Thank you for all that you do to support your students at home, and I am grateful to be able to do my small part in helping them grow. GO BIG CATS! Ms. Kurilko Hello, Hello, Bryant & Pattengill families!!
I have recently switched my "Hello" song to this wonderful piece by Rosalia Schultz, a fellow music teacher in Michigan. This song uses an unusual unpaired meter (specifically, it is in 7/8 time), and it is in Mixolydian tonality. These kindergarteners are audiating tonal content (including resting tone and tonality), as well as audiating unusual macro and microbeats! Bryant & Pattengill have grown so much in just two short months. I am so proud of all of our students! We will be diving into Thanksgiving soon, and Thanksgiving songs and themes! I am so excited and cannot wait to share this music with all of my students as well as with you! Best, Ms. Kurilko P.S. The sniffles and sneezes are here and the music room is in desperate need of tissue donations! If you would like to donate a box or two of tissues, we would greatly appreciate it. Please send them to school with your child, labeled "Music," so that they end up in our room. Thank you so much! The Bryant/Pattengill PTO graciously granted 30 ukuleles for the students at Pattengill!!I am BEYOND grateful for this wonderful gift, and the students are too!
The students and I have discussed how to respect instruments, what the separate parts of the ukulele are/look like, and how amazing it is to have been given such a wonderful gift. Thank you again, PTO! These ukuleles are a wonderfully educational gift which have cast a huge ray of sunshine into the vocal music room at Pattengill. Thanks for brightening up our school! We already learned how to play the song "Lime in the Coconut" from the Muppets, which is just a C7 chord. Here is the link for the Muppet video, and the shape of the chord on the ukulele! Hello Bryant & Pattengill!
I told the 5th graders that I would upload this so they could watch it on their own time and practice. Here is Heather Shouldice's "STOMP RONDO"! The reason why it's called "Stomp Rondo" is because in music, a "Rondo" is a piece where the musical theme at the beginning keeps returning. The claps are broken up into three sections: A, B, and C. The "A" section continues to come back over and over again. If you watch & audiate closely, the "STOMP RONDO"s form is this: A B A C A Enjoy! Welcome back to school, families! I've been so excited to start our year, I have not written a blog post! I hope you are excited for all that this school year has in store! We have had a great first 3 weeks in music class. I can't wait to see how the Bryant & Pattengill students continue to build upon their knowledge from last year as they learn and grow through music. I am overjoyed to introduce our new kindergartners and young 5's classes to the music room. We had a lot of fun learning and I can't wait to get to know them better over the course of the school year! Additionally, I am so thrilled to come into school and meet SO many new faces. I am proud to say I have learned everyone's name! I am so excited to be your child's teacher. Some of you may or may not know the word "Audiation". If you aren't sure, you're probably wondering, "Why does Ms. Kurilko keep telling my child to 'audiate'? What does that word even mean??" Audiation can sound complex, but I teach it to kids by saying "Think music inside your head"! Here's a quote from the Gordon Institute of Music Learning about my favorite word, audiate:
"Audiate" isn't just a fancy word for being silent, it means that we're creating, improvising, thinking, and imagining music inside of our heads! Often, little ones cannot audiate before it is explicitly taught to them. For the past few weeks, we have been reviewing how to audiate, what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like. Challenge your child at home by asking them the definition of "AUDIATION"! You may be surprised at what you see. :) Read more at: https://giml.org/mlt/audiation/ Hello, family & friends of Bryant and Pattengill! Welcome to the new Bryant/Pattengill Music Website.
